No replacement worker bans... for now

It wasn't the first time the House of Commons had a debate over a bill (in this case, C-386) that proposed a ban on the use of replacement workers in federally regulated workplaces. Nevertheless, small businesses can breathe a sigh of relief as C-386 was defeated Wednesday, October 20th. From the beginning, CFIB was a leader on this file. When the bill first surfaced late last year, we got in touch with Michael Ignatieff's office to make sure they knew how harmful it was for small business across Canada. As the time for debate and vote came near, we sent an email to all Liberals (since we knew that the Bloc and NDP would likely vote in favour of such a bill) to urge them to vote against Bill C-386. CFIB also raised it in many meetings with MPs over the last year to let them know our concerns and that we would be watching how they vote. All in all, CFIB can be proud that it stood up against the Bill and ensured that unions wouldn't gain greater powers to keep small businesses hostage with work stoppages.
