Farm Unions “Shackled” by High Court

Farmers have been fighting for years to keep unions out of the farm, arguing that collective bargaining would ruin their industry.  In a recent CFIB survey, 68 per cent of our Ontario agri-business members indicated that unionization would have a negative effect on their operation.   In addition to constant labour strike threats, unionization of farm workers would result in higher labour costs (meaning higher prices for consumers) and increased conflict between farmers and their employees.   This long-awaited Supreme Court ruling has finally extinguished the threat of unionization in the Ontario agriculture sector.

Over the years, CFIB has gone to bat for our Ontario agri-business members, highlighting the adverse impact unionization would have on Ontario farmers.  We have also looked at the effects unionization has on workers, especially those who are reluctant to join a union. Employees in unionized workplaces in Ontario are forced to pay full union dues regardless of whether or not they want to be an actual member of the union, as examined in CFIB's policy brief "Mandatory Union Dues: A Made in Canada Approach".
