What a difference 40 years makes! Before CFIB, small- and medium-sized businesses were a mere afterthought in the minds of political leaders, government bureaucrats, bankers, educators, journalists and others. Now, in 2011, the entrepreneurial sector is considered a priority by decision makers, having grown to represent close to half of the Canadian economy.

Public opinion polls now show that Canadians consistently rank small businesses as the occupation they most respect. The fact the federal government designated 2011 as the "Year of the Entrepreneur" is a concrete recognition of these changes.
We at CFIB are very proud of what has been accomplished in our first 40 years, but we also have an eye to the future. Some serious current trends present new challenges that will keep us all occupied: the retirement of baby-boomers, looming labour shortages, massive pressure on health care expenses as life expectancy increases, enhanced globalization, the rise of economies such as China and India and the implications of climate change, to name just a few. Fortunately, entrepreneurs have shown their ability to adapt to change: a characteristic that will serve Canada well into the future.
Rest assured that CFIB will be here to best represent your interests for the next 40 years-and beyond!
