Labour Outlook 2020
July 13, Minister Darin King announced that total employment will grow by 2.8% from 2011 to 2020, representing 7,700 new jobs in the provincial economy. However, when attrition is added to that number, over 70,000 job openings are anticipated to arise between 2011 and 2020. Skill demands will continue to increase.
It is anticipated that approximately 67% of all job openings in the 2011 to 2010 period will be in management occupations, or will require some form of post-secondary education. Wage levels have been steadily increasing and will continue to increase.
As Minister King outlined in his brief, the job outlook for the province is very strong. However, because labour markets are expected to continue to tighten in the next ten years and beyond, SME's can expect that shortage of labour and skilled labour will become more of a problem for them.
CFIB sits on the Labour Market Committee of the Strategic Partnership with government, business and labour. Consequently, we are in the position to ensure that solutions being put forth by government (e.g. immigration and changes to apprenticeship) best suit our members.
