CRA Commissioner Responds to CFIB Concerns on Union Threats

CFIB recently spoke to Minister Gail Shea of the CRA to outline our members' concerns on CRA officials' impartiality in audits and other matters. As you may know, several unions, including two representing Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) staff have launched campaigns urging their members to approach small business owners to either threaten boycotts or to "educate" them on why public sector pensions are fine the way they are.  The Agency was quick to respond to our concerns.

CFIB followed up to the CRA Minister and Commissioner which references the CRA's Conflict of Interest rules. The very first principle of CRA's Conflict of Interest Code is that employees shall: "perform his or her official duties and arrange his or her private affairs in such a manner that public confidence and trust in the integrity, objectivity and impartiality of government and the CRA are conserved and enhanced."

CRA will issue special instructions to staff to remind them of their obligations and investigate any potential violations.  In addition, CRA outlines a process for any member who may feel they are being singled out as a result of their participation in CFIB or this campaign.
