Six Atlantic municipalities make top 50 on list of business-friendly communities: St. John's and Corner Brook at opposite ends of the list

St. John's, October 18, 2011 - Six of Atlantic Canada's largest cities made the top 50 in a ranking of the 100 business friendly cities, according to an annual report by the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) that both ranks and measures the entrepreneurial characteristics of municipalities.

CFIB's Communities in Boom: Canada's Top Entrepreneurial Cities compares 100 of Canada's largest municipalities on such measures as the number of small businesses in a community, the degree of business optimism, and on the effectiveness of local and provincial policy on businesses.

The qualifying Atlantic Canadian municipalities appeared in the following order, from best to worst:

"Just like the past few years, Moncton has come out on top in Atlantic. Clearly, they're doing something that others are not," said Leanne Hachey, CFIB's Atlantic vice-president. "And although six Atlantic Canadian municipalities cracked the top 50, even their low scores indicate we've got a lot more work to do to become more entrepreneurial."

According to Bradley George, CFIB's director of provincial affairs for Newfoundland and Labrador, Corner Brook's ranking is particularly disappointing. "Corner Brook dropped from the top 50 in last year's study to worst in Atlantic Canada in this year's report. City officials should ask themselves why that's the case and do something about it."
