Requiring unions to be open and transparent

Federal MP Russ Hiebert's previous union financial disclosure bill (C-317) was reintroduced recently as C-377 due to technical issues. The goal of the bill has not changed - requiring unions to disclose to the public how they spend mandatory union dues.

CFIB members agree with the majority of Canadians that all workers should be entitled to safe, healthy and "democratic" workplaces. Unfortunately, employees in virtually all unionized workplaces in Canada are currently required to pay full union dues regardless of whether or not they want to be an actual member of the union. To make matters worse, in many parts of Canada unions are only required to make financial statements available to actual union members and only on request. There are no regulations in any of those jurisdictions specifying the amount of detail in union financial statements.

CFIB continues to support this bill and encourages all parties to follow suit.
